Sonablate is the preferred medical device used for the precise ablation of prostate tissue using HIFU energy. With its ability to capture real-time images of the prostate gland, it allows the physician to create a custom ablation plan for each individual. The increased accuracy of this advanced tool allows for ultimate precision when delivering ablation to targeted areas.
The procedure can take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the size of the prostate. It can be done under general anesthesia, IV sedation, or an epidural to ensure the patient doesn’t move during the process. During the procedure, a suprapubic catheter may be utilized to assist with urination for the next 2-3 weeks. After the procedure, patients usually take 2-4 hours to recover.
Although it is recommended for the patient to gradually get back into the swing of things, most patients feel well enough to do regular activities such as going out to eat, or taking a walk at nighttime if they had their procedure earlier in the day.
